More about our program!
A Day in the Life...
Japan on the Road centers around school life in Japan and focuses on third through fifth grade children. Teams made up of two Americans and two Japanese are sent into elementary schools throughout the state of Oregon and SW Washington with a specially designed kit that includes a model of a Japanese home, a slide presentation created specifically for this program that follows Keiko and Yasuo through their school day, maps, a Japanese school uniform, a traditional Japanese elementary school book bag packed with all the books and other stuff that a Japanese student would use during the day, and other everyday articles and activities to help the students visualize a day in the life of a Japanese elementary student.
Sample Program Outline
Japan on the Road has been designed to stretch the students' minds as they learn about the people and places of today's Japan. The program is presented as follows:
1.) Introducing Japan!
Using maps from a Japanese classroom, the national flag, the blackboard and paper, our team will introduce the students to Japan. Students will locate the islands that make up Japan, be taught a little about its geography and see and hear the Japanese language.
2.) Did You Remember Your Pass?
The students will be shown a typical morning in a Japanese home when our Japanese mmbers perform a short skit for them in Japanese! They will also discover what kids their age in Japan take to school each day.
3.) Ohayo Gozaimasu Sensei!(Good Morning Teacher!)
The students will learn how important respect is in the Japanese society starting with the role of the teacher in Japan. After learning how to greet teachers in Japan, they will meet Keiko, Yasuo and their friends as we take them to Japan via the slide projector. The slide presentation is designed to include the students' participation and follows Keko and Yasuo through their day, showing them at home, at school and at play.
4.) Let's Play!
Following a fifteen minute recess and stretching break, your students will learn more about Japan at three "activity stations," including a "tour" of our model Japanese home, a matching game with pictures of everyday things and people in Japan and the U.S., and a lesson, for 4th and 5th graders, on Japanese table etiquette including the art of using chopsticks! For younger children (2nd-3rd grade) we include a traditional Japanese folk story called Kamishibai.
5.) Wrap-Up:
Team members will conclude the program by drawing a Venn diagram on your black board (two intersecting circles,) with the students identifying similarities and differences between their lives and the lives of Japanese students.
Reserving a Classroom Visit
Japan on
the Road volunteers are ready and eager to visit your classroom. Please complete the reservation form and send it to the Japan-America Society of Oregon as soon as possible. School visits begin in October and continue through the school year. The sooner you make a reservation, the sooner our teams will be able to bring Keiko and Yasuo into your classroom! To inquire about reserving a visit, please contact Sheryl Fuller at (503)552-8814 or send an e-mail to sfuller@jaso.org
Volunteer Opportunities
Japan on the Road would not exist without
our volunteers! Last year although our volunteers visited
more than 70 classrooms, we were forced to turn away
almost 30 schools. We estimate more than 100 schools will
request visits by Japan on the Road (JOR) teams
again this year and we are looking for new volunteers.
Each Fall new and continuing volunteers are invited
to a training workshop where experienced team members
teach new volunteers about using the kit. In addition,
JASO staff provide one-to-one training sessions and new
volunteers are encouraged to attend classroom visits as
observers. Once you feel comfortable with the program, we
start you out slowly until youre ready to become a
full fledged JOR Team member! To find out more about how
you can become a volunteer, please contact Sheryl Fuller
at (503) 552-8814 or send an e-mail to
sfuller@jaso.org
