ATJO is a membership
organization for teachers and professors of Japanese in
the State of Oregon and SW Washington. ATJO sponsors
workshops for teachers and publishes a quarterly
newsletter with information for teachers of Japanese.

International Programs Specialist
The Oregon Department of
Education has an Education program specialist who manages
all foreign language and international programs for the
state. ODE also implements an annual Trust called the
Kyotaru Trust which provides 6 Oregon teachers with the
opportunity to visit Japan and conduct research each
year. In addition, ODE implements exchange programs with
Toyama Prefecture, Oregon's Sister State in Japan.

The Japanese Language Project
provides support to teachers of Japanese throughout the
State of Oregon. They are responsible for developing the
Benchmarks for Japanese language education in Oregon and
have recently completed development of the Oregon
Japanese Oral Performance Assessment.

The Portland Japanese School is
managed by the Shokookai of Portland. The school meets
every Saturday during the school year and is in session
every day during the summer vacation. Enrollment is
generally limited to children whose parents are employed
by Shokookai member firms.

WACO is a non-profit membership
organization that develops and implements international
programs. WACO administers the AID International Visitors
Program, a School Visitor Program that sends university
students from countries around the world into Oregon
schools for cultural exchange and sponsors a variety of
lectures, workshops and other programs on issues of
international importance including Japan-related topics.
